About the Judge

Judge Edward O. Burke (Ret.) is now devoting his full time and attention to his mediation practice which includes arbitration, private judicial solutions, and special master appointments in civil and family litigation.  In 2013, Judge Burke was welcomed onto the roster of neutrals with the American Arbitration Association.  In 2016, he was inducted into the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals and became an Affiliate Mediator with mediation.org.

In his twelve years on the Maricopa County Superior Court, Judge Burke was assigned to the civil, criminal, and family law departments. On each of these assignments, he conducted numerous settlement conferences. He served two years as the Presiding Civil Department Judge and, most recently, three years as one of the court’s three complex litigation judges.

He served for two years on the board of the Arizona Judges Association. Judge Burke has lectured on civil litigation at the National Judicial College and at numerous bar CLE programs. He was a panelist at the 2009 conference of the National Structured Settlement Association and at the 16th Annual West Region Construction Defect & Insurance Coverage Conference.

In 2009 he received the Judge of the Year award from the Phoenix Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and in 2010 the Judicial Integrity Award from the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association. In 2011 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Arizona Association of Defense Counsel.

Before his appointment to the bench, Judge Burke held an “AV” rating from Martindale Hubbell and was a certified real estate law specialist. His practice included construction, real estate and business litigation, and he served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. Among his professional activities, he served as the chair of the Lawyer Referral Committee and was a member of the board of directors of the Maricopa County Bar Association. He was also on the Civil Practice and Procedure, Debtor Creditor Rights, and Member Assistance Committees of the State Bar of Arizona.

While in practice, he earned a masters degree in business administration from Arizona State University. He has taught law courses at Onondaga County Community College in New York, Phoenix College, Scottsdale Community College, and the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.
